Awning Fabrics

The fabric covering awnings has been a slow change from that of canvas duck commonly used in the past. This type of fabric was changed as it was flammable, faded and would too easily grow mildew. The awning industry took the steps to find alternatives to this inadequate material. The next step was infact a vinyl plastic coating that was water resistant however still faded, then followed by vinyl resins, polyester materials and acrylic fibers. The new materials did provide more durable awnings however if it hadn't been for architectural changes, aluminum awnings and air conditioning, which saw a decrease in use of colorful fabric awnings. They were seen as old fashioned and in a world dominated by new structure styles people felt they would distract from the smooth lines of the new architecture.

More and more people were investing in aluminum and plastic coverings and this caused the creation of new awning shapes. Businesses took advantage of these awnings and it became a businesses primary sign. Businesses would adorn their signs with bold lettering, colours, and light trying to attract potential customers.

Nowadays the average consumer has available to them a wide variety of options when it comes to the visual aspect of their awning, they come in so many shapes, sizes, frames and fabrics. Fabric awnings are infact making a come back on store fronts and residential locations, as well as some historical districts that are helping to keep the nostalgic feel of the area by continuing to use traditional fabric awnings
